  • Harvard Student ‪@theburningbush318‬ vs. Pastor Stuart Knechtle: WHO HAD THE STRONGER CASE? 🎓⚔️✝️
In this heated and explosive debate between a Harvard student and Christian apologist Stuart Knechtle, everything is on the table - salvation, the Eucharist, Church history, and the truth of Scripture!
The student brings bold arguments grounded in early Church writings, challenging modern Protestant theology and asking the hard questions:
⚡ “How can your interpretation be right if it contradicts those who received and compiled the Bible?”
⚡ “Did the early Christians believe the Eucharist was just symbolic - or something more?”
⚡ “Can salvation really be a one-time event, or is it a process?”
But Stuart did not back down…
He fires back with Protestant distinctives, appeals to Scripture, and even mentions a mysterious Vatican III - but does it hold up under scrutiny?
You won’t believe what happens when early Church Fathers, the Reformation, and even cannibalism accusations enter the arena.
This is one of the most intense apologetics exchanges we’ve seen - and you’ll want to catch every second.
Watch, decide, and COMMENT who made the stronger case!

Sam you got this one wrong! John 4:32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that you know not of. 34 Jesus said unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Taking communion is a reminder that doing his will is how we receive spiritual sustenance.

Go watch the full debate, he addresses both of these issues when the thief on the cross is invoked. Essentially, God condescends to us based on where we are. For the theif, he was dying on a cross. For me, I am a healthy young person with time to commit to living a life of faithfulness. Each to his own ability as the talents to the servants.

    • @Larry-gu6km
      @Larry-gu6km 2 дня назад

@Fabtsp The Catholic Church actually teaches that there are three forms of baptism:
Baptism of water (the ordinary means),
Baptism of desire (for those who truly wanted baptism but died before receiving it),
Baptism of blood (for those who die for Christ without having been baptized).
So yes, it is possible for someone who never knew about water baptism to still be saved-if they sought God sincerely and would have desired baptism had they known.
      But here's the real danger:
Some people do know about baptism, and are still convinced it's just a symbol-or even unnecessary. And when presented with clear evidence from Scripture and tradition, they harden their hearts.
Now picture this: at the moment of death, when the truth is revealed, they’re given one final choice-to be baptized into Christ. But because of their pride and past rejection, they refuse.
      That’s terrifying. And very possible.
So the issue isn't just about not knowing.
      It’s about rejecting.
And encouraging others to dismiss the necessity of baptism-especially when we know better-isn’t kindness. It’s cruelty.
Because it puts souls at risk.
Let’s not try to dance around baptism. Let’s call people into it. Out of love.

I have learned from this comment section that people care more about their denomination, rather than being believers in Christ. As an Anglican, I really don't care about my denomination or any other, but rather if my heart is truly in the right place with God. Remember, when Jesus resurrected, there were no such things as denominations. These are human constructs shaped by culture and division on what the word of God truly is, and even Jesus called out the Pharisees for literally the same thing. We are trying to claim to be more Christian than our brothers while missing the core of what it means to be Christian.

    • @stephenbarr8013

The young man was not claiming to be more Christian than anybody. He was saying that a certain DOCTRINE about the Eucharist is the original and authentic doctrine about it and that we know this because all extant Christian writings from the first 300 years agree on it. He never talked about his "denomination". He only said "I am Orthodox" because Knechtle seemed to think he was a Catholic. There were no "denominations" for the first 15 centuries of Christianity. The idea that there could be numerous rival churches that all had an equal claim to be churches is a modern notion.

Later on as we all know iron sharpen iron, I am orthodox Christian and attend Catholic Church. By far a lot more emphasis on actions and proper worship in the Catholic Church. We are all under Jesus and the ketchles have brought countless people to Christ. I thank you Jesus for making these kinds of people. We all fall at times because we arnt perfect. Yeah kitchle wasn’t completely humble in this video but that is because of the position they hold, they need to understand their position is meaningless compared to Christ. Everyone keep an open mind Jesus loves you, it’s all too easy to think I’ve got things figured out so I see myself in kitchle a lot in this video. @ okay… I’ve noticed this theme before. That there are some people who are baptized orthodox or go to Orthodox Church yet maintain allegiance in some manner wether formal or sentimental to the Roman Catholic Church, and do it mainly because of an affinity for their friends or spouse or some past experience. They want to socialize with friend or they want to be with their spouse or be buried next to their lover who is in a Catholic cemetery (and they can’t do that if they aren’t formally a part of the Roman Catholic Church) or give homage to what helped them along the way. But.. you seem not to be going because you’re really deeply Roman Catholic, you’re attending for lesser, external reasons. And to that I’d say.. be careful. Catholics not only conduct themselves differently than orthodox people, but think even more differently than they act compared to orthodox Christians. And if you spend enough time there, you may take up their ways and heretic beliefs. Ecumenism is not advisable by the Orthodox Church and perhaps over time you will see why. The deeper you go, the more you may understand that they are divergent heretics.

I really just want to say how much I appreciate this young man’s courage and humility in this debate. He chose to be calm despite Stuart’s interruptions and slight change of subjects/deflection of what the student was saying. Which is such a good example of how my Orthodox friends are! To me, it seems Stuart was not truly seeking to understand and chose to speak over the student based off of how he had been taught by his father Cliffe. While I do have a lot of respect for Cliffe and enjoy watching his debates, there’s still some things that will rub me the wrong way, spiritually and theologically.
I was raised Baptist and am now Coptic Orthodox because of my questioning about these very things discussed. Overall, I believe my prayers about deeply seeking God and His Truth have led me to the beautiful blessing that is the Coptic Orthodox Church and faith.
My reasoning, I believe this as a Christian, it only makes sense to go to the root of where and how it all started.
I don’t believe that the modern Protestant churches of today are where or how God really wants us to worship Him. Because, it looks more like the world. I mean, how many times have you heard someone say going to a Protestant church (i.e. non-denominational, baptist.. etc.) is like going to a concert with something like a speech after it?
I remember sitting in the auditorium of my once beloved Bible Church, and there’s this tug from God, saying, “This is not how I want you to worship me and know me.”
From there, I went through a lot of research, classes, and prayers.
November 3rd, 2024 I have been baptized in the Name of the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, One God. Amen.
It is so true, when the student says that we must workout our salvation. We have grace, yes, but we are human. We are saved. We are being saved, We will be saved. A relationship with God is to be nurtured and taken seriously. Just like you take care of your horizontal relationships, you are to be taking care of the vertical relationship with Him.

Funny thing that the Jews who crucified Jesus had the same question as the Protestants, and what did Jesus answer them:
"The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever." John 6: 52-58.

    • @kevinlaw7375
      @kevinlaw7375 День назад +4

From my study bible, it explains that the bread of life (Jesus) is a spiritual bread that satisfies us completely, leading to eternal life. But not Jesus' actual flesh. Which makes sense to me. Jesus compares this in john 6:58 to the manna eaten by our ancestors.
Manna = physical bread -> sustained the ancestors for a day
Jesus = Spiritual bread -> sustains you eternally
Similarly, Jesus refers himself as living water in John 4:10-13. He is talking about spiritual refreshment and does not mean that we will never thirst physically again.
Stuart might have been exasperated and let out some offensive statement about the Eucharist. But he is just trying to point out that it is not about the actual flesh and blood of Christ.
I'm from an Anglican church, I guess you can call me protestant. But I believe that as the body of Christ, we should care less about our denominations, who win an argument and who get destroyed. These debates should be solely for our edification and walk with Christ.

    • @ysxwadyx
      @ysxwadyx День назад

Exactly 💯. Jesus Christ already answered and it was not symbolic but truly his presence in the Eucharist which is why some disciples said it was a hard teaching. And because it's a hard teaching, many Protestants keep trying to avoid it at all cost. They are no different then the disciples who fled the scene when Jesus told him to eat his flesh and blood. He even tripled down on its importance (see John 6).
It's also fulfillment of prophesies as during the Last Supper, Jesus ordained the apostles to his Church (when he washed their feet): the example in OT is Melchizedek who was a high priest and ordained ministers by washing them. Also the Eucharist being served by the High Priest, in this case of the Last Supper, it's Jesus Christ and the sacrifice for Passover(The Last Supper) was lamb in the OT and then became Jesus in the NT as he is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. When he was crucified he was also crowned with a crown of thorns which is the OT is basically prophesied by the scripture when God asks Abraham to kill his first born son and instead God provided a lamb with a crown of thorns. If you notice this story also tells us that God so loved us (humankind) that he gave his only begotten son, Jesus Christ aka God in the flesh and Emmanuel (=God among us). So it's all so prophetic and as Jesus said himself, if you do not eat the manna which comes from Heaven, meaning Him, you do not have everlasting life (meaning you need it and yes there's a spiritual component to it which is his true presence in the Eucharist).

Cliffe emphasizes here that he trusts the Gospel from Mark, Luke, John, and Matthew over Muhammad. Guess who were their students? The Church Fathers men like Polycarp, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, and Origen who preserved the teachings of the apostles. These weren’t just neutral historians; they believed in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, honored the communion of saints, and upheld apostolic succession. So if Cliffe trusts the Gospels, he should also trust the very first Christians who were taught by the Gospel writers themselves and they clearly followed the same traditions still practiced by the ancient churches today.

How do you reconcile that the apostles and later their disciples believed things that are so opposite to churches such as the protestant churches (no matter which one of the 300+ denominations of the we're talking about)

@@garysanders8350 I agree 100% that we should be humble students of God’s truth which is why I go to both Scripture and the earliest Christians who were discipled by the apostles themselves. That’s not putting God in a box; that’s listening to how God chose to work through His Church. The apostles didn’t just write letters they taught, ordained leaders, and PASSED ON THE AUTHORITY 2 Thessalonians 2:15, Luke 10:16). If we ignore the Church they built, we risk building a version of Christianity disconnected from the foundation Christ Himself laid (1 Timothy 3:15, Matthew 16:18). You are attacking strawman respectfully, comparing that to hadiths in Islam isn’t accurate our Tradition comes directly from the apostles, not centuries later. If the Bible is our final authority, then we have to take seriously what it says about the authority of the Church and the role of tradition otherwise, we’re picking and choosing which verses to follow.

It is, perhaps, important to highlight a few details here:
    1) The Knechtle's are (to the best of my knowledge) Baptists/Evangelicals - or however they might describe themselves; they are not classical Protestants as the Reformed, Anglicans, and Lutherans are.
    2) Consequently, their belief regarding the Eucharist is, itself, an even further departure from what figures like Zwingli erroneously taught. Thus, when the Ethiopian Orthodox brother states that their view "popped-up 500 years ago", it isn't even THAT old. It is the novel invention of modern evangelicalism.
    3) Historic, classical Protestant doctrine regarding the Eucharist is very firmly rooted in the Real Presence of Christ - a view which constitutes just about every Christian who is NOT a modern evangelical. The disagreement between the historic Christian traditions is ultimately not about WHETHER Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, but rather, HOW (an issue that, whilst important, is largely of secondary importance).
    4) The criticism of the Knechtle's remarks in this interaction are entirely justified.
Unfortunately, the Knechtle's are rather uneducated on Ecclesiastical History - a fact readily demonstrated by this interaction. As someone who has also taught and lectured in Church History, the Orthodox brother is correct in his assessment of the Patristics: 'Real Presence' is essentially the universal view of the Early Church. This is because (drum roll, please) that's what the Scriptures teach... go figure.
As someone of the Reformed branch of the faith, I simply encourage my Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox & Oriental Orthodox brothers to do the due diligence of study, and recognise that what is presented here as "Protestantism" is actually a clear departure from classical Protestant doctrine; it is the byproduct of something which we should all be against: modern evangelicalism. As I said earlier, the criticism of the Knechtle's remarks in this interaction are entirely justified.
The historic branches of the great tree that is the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church ultimately share far more in common with each other than not. Whilst intra-Christian dialogue can be good and valuable, we as Christians are currently assailed on all sides by the enemies of God - and unity among the household of faith is, perhaps, as important now as ever before...

Yet if we look at apostles like Peter and John whom the Bible documented as of Jesus’ closest disciples, but even they themselves had made near grave mistakes on how or who to worship (Peter wanted to raise altars for Moses and Elijah, John fell to his knees twice to an angel…)

      @win6111 2 дня назад +2

This whole claim backfires against you because unlike you Jesus never said I mean symbolically guy’s not literally!
It becomes more obvious. In John 6:50-53, we encounter several different forms of the Greek verb phago, which means “eating.” However, after the Jews began to express incredulity at the idea of eating the flesh of Christ, Jesus intensified his language. In verse 54, John begins to use trogo instead of phago. Trogo is a decidedly more vivid term, meaning “to chew on” or “to gnaw on”-as when an animal is ripping apart its prey. Christ is teaching his followers that they must literally eat his flesh and blood, which is true food and true drink.
So sorry we have to listen to Jesus not you or your pastors or Martin Luther and if what your claiming is true then all the early Christians are wrong including the apostles who taught this to their students I.e the church fathers. It means that the Holy Sprit was waiting for 1500 years for Luther so that he can teach us all the ‘truth’.
And as for communion doesn’t save- It is, as Christ Himself says in the Last Supper, “(His) body” and “(His) blood” (Mt 26:26-28; Mk 14:22-24; Lk 22:19-20; 1 Cor 11:24-25)

The comments under that debate are honestly shameful. I’m seeing people mock others for not having immediate answers, as if that somehow makes you more "spiritually superior" Since when did Christian dialogue become a competition for who can clap back fastest instead of a pursuit of truth in humility? and the saddest part is many of you are doing this in the name of Orthodoxy, treating it like a badge to boast in, not a calling to walk humbly before the Lord....
..."As an Orthodox, I’m proud"? that’s the most backward thing you could say. The Eucharist is supposed to remind us of Christ’s brokenness, not feed our arrogance but here you are, turning sacred things into opportunities to gloat. That’s not Orthodoxy. That’s vanity draped in tradition that’s self-righteousness masquerading as reverence.
And to those mocking Cliffe and Stewart do you think the Holy Spirit is impressed by your sarcasm? Do you believe Jesus is clapping along when you tear people down for not having your preferred answer on demand? Newsflash: theological pride is still pride. And if you think your theology gives you the right to mock others, then your theology has become your idol.
The Spirit of God doesn’t rejoice in mockery. He convicts, teaches, corrects, and comforts. So if your reaction to someone’s silence or struggle is to laugh, gloat, or ‘own’ them in the comments, then you’re not operating under the Spirit. You're operating under your flesh, and worse-you’re defending it in the name of God.
We’re called to speak truth in love, not in condescension. We’re called to correct with patience, not pride. If your so-called defense of the Eucharist or Orthodoxy doesn’t reflect Christ’s character, then you’re just making noise empty, arrogant noise that helps no one and hardens hearts.
It's not about who "wins" a debate. It's about who honors Christ. And from what I’ve seen in these comments far too many are failing that test.

As an evangelical (traditional) Lutheran, I don’t think we should continue to associate with the vast majority of Protestants in the ecumenical sense. We are constantly being associated with what has become mainstream low church Protestantism, and we are nothing alike. I face palmed when Knecthle used Martin Luther as an example of not believing in true presence. I find more common ground when I speak to Catholics and Orthodox men and women when talking about Christ. His presence in the Eucharist is true. Baptism is a crucially important sacrament to be washed clean from sin. These things give us faith in Jesus, by the workings of the Holy Spirit. If one denies these things, they are denying the Holy Spirit. If you deny the Spirit, how can you believe in Christ?

This was not a heated or an explosive debate. It's wasn't even a debate but a discussion between devoted followers in Christ about a specific subject. I owe my awakening about Christ to Cliff for bringing the gospel into my life, and after all the good news he's spread and people he's brought to Christ, he and his son are suddenly derided en-masse because of a disagreement at the drop of a hat by a bunch of armchair generals who the majority of which don't witness the gospel to anyone or discuss it in such an open forum. I wish I had 10% of their faith and knowledge.

I found it hard to trust Stuart, as the young Christian brother clearly asks about the early Christian church 1,2,3 century, he gets a rebuttal that jumps over a thousand years ahead in time to someone who actually would agree with him but Stuart is trying to use Martin Luther to disprove him. Stuart needs some lessons from this young man!

I think the problem with the Protestant position is that they don't understand why we need the Eucharist and what the reason for it is: To bring life back into their dead blood. Dead blood because of their individual sins. Sin is equal to death, and blood purifies. God said that the Eucharist will be the Body and Blood of Christ, and that means it will be. How it happens is none of my business. I don't understand anything that God does, nor am I capable of comprehending any of it even if it were explained to me. So why do we try to explain everything? I already believe in Christ, therefore, I trust that everything He said is true. That's good enough for me. God bless.

Tertullian: If [Christ] says that “the flesh profits nothing,” then the meaning must take direction from the context of that remark. For seeing that they regarded his speech as hard and unbearable, as though he had really prescribed his flesh for them to eat [vv. 54-58], since his purpose was to assign the establishment of salvation to the Spirit, he first said, “It is the spirit that gives life,” and only then added, “the flesh profits nothing”-toward the giving of life, of course. He also proceeds to state how he wishes “the Spirit” to be understood. “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” . . . And so, when establishing his teaching as the Life-giver (because the Word is spirit and life), he also said that it is his flesh, because the Word also was made flesh [see Jn 1:14]. We ought therefore to desire him in order that we may have life. We ought to devour him with the ear, and to ruminate on him with the mind and to digest him by faith. On the Resurrection of the Flesh 37.
